Which is the "best" university in Australia? Is there any ranking?

There is no such thing as the "best" university in Australia. Different universities excel in different areas. Popularity of the university depends on individual preferences and perceptions. All universities are government accredited and internationally recognized.

No, there is no official ranking of Australian universities. You need to select what’s best for you depending on your qualifications, grades and courses you wish to apply to as each institution has different entry requirements. You must also taken into account your budget, existing visa regulations, location, climate and lifestyle preferences when making this important decision .

Are there any entrance exams required?

You are required to prove your English proficiency through IELTS exam. You have to fulfill your institution and High commission’s requirement for admission and visa. It is highly recommended that you have an IELTS score before submitting applications or meeting with institution representatives during Interview Programs held in India.

Besides English proficiency, admission for most courses is based on past academic qualifications and/ or work experience – hence no ‘entrance exams’ are required. However, for some course such as MBA , referee reports and Statement of Purpose is equally important. For research degrees, your research proposal, previous publications, contact with potential supervisor in the University does influence the admission. Entry into creative programs such as graphic design is based on submitting your portfolio of artwork while selection into some hospitality and medicine programs involve a personal/telephonic interview. Please note that admission into certain health programs is restricted by quotas and candidates might be asked to pass the respective Board/Council exams to be professionally recognized .

How much does it cost to study in Australia?

This depends on the course, duration, the university , location . While MBAs range from A$ 18,000 to A$ 54,000 , Science and Engineering courses are from A$15,000 to A$21,000 p.a. Living expenses range from A$10,000 to A$15,000 p.a depending on individual lifestyles., while A$ 12,000 is the estimate for visa purpose. You can take a bank loan to finance your education. When do I start my course?

Intakes in Australian institutions usually begin in either February or July. However some courses start throughout the year. If you are in your final semester/year you can submit an application for July intake if you expect your final results to be issued by the end of June. In this case, you will be issued a conditional letter of offer (if you qualify) which would enable you start your visa process. Fee payment is however, is subject to fulfilling the conditions listed in your offer.

Am I allowed to work while I am studying in Australia?

As a student you are legally permitted to work twenty hours a week during semester and full time during vacation. It can be on-campus or off-campus. Once you enroll at the institution in Australia you will have to apply for a work permit to DIMA with a letter from your institute as proof of enrolment. It is however important to balance work and study.

Are there any scholarships available?

There are some government-funded scholarships like the IPRS (International Postgraduate Research Scholarship) as well as some available at specific institutions under certain Faculties. Most Australian universities offer scholarships to international students for attracting high quality researchers. An honours (4 year degree) with research experience is a must. A few scholarships for coursework programs and undergraduate courses are also offered. However, it must be noted that the number of scholarships available for international students is limited and the competition for awards, intense. No country specific quotas applicable.

How can I finance my education?

Many banks now sanction loans up to Rs.15 lacs to students who intend pursuing higher education abroad. Since the rate of interest is reasonably low with repayment normally commencing one year after completion of the program, many families find this a more convenient option. Please check with your bank for detailed eligibility criteria including collateral security, parent’s income.

Would I find placement after I finish the course?

All universities have a careers and employment office to assist you find jobs anywhere in the world. This includes information on employers; resume writing, facing an interview, recruitment fairs, returning home seminars.
